July 2020 - Introducing LEAD Education Program

Dear Friends of Sports Outreach,

It’s no secret that education can provide a way out of poverty for children and young people in poor circumstances. This is particularly true in slums and impoverished rural areas where there are not strong public schools and many kids cannot even think about attending because they don’t even have money for books, school fees, and required school clothing.

For the past 15 years, through our Andrew Popp Memorial Education Scholarship Fund, SOI has enabled some of the poorest children in east Africa to attend low-cost private schools. This has provided a path out of poverty for hundreds of children. During this time, we have seen many of these children grow up with hope, work hard, and end up with good jobs, careers, and leadership capacities. We realize with each passing year how valuable this opportunity is for the young people we minister to in our sports ministry programs.

We want to help even more! The critical need for education is motivating us to expand beyond our current capacity, so we are incorporating the Andrew Popp Memorial Education Scholarship Fund into a program with broader reach. We’re excited to introduce our new LEAD Education Program, which will provide you with an opportunity to invest in the education of young people in all of our ministry fields. LEAD is an acronym for Learning and Education through Academics and Discipleship. It is a distinctive long-term approach to providing education. It combines our off-the-field mentoring and discipleship ministry with formal schooling, resulting in educational success. The end goal is the building of the next generation of Christian leaders, in ministry, church, business, community and family.

What’s distinctive about it?

1. We work with the children in our sports programs before they are candidates for receiving education resources.

2. We get to know them and select children with strong character and leadership capacity.

3. We work closely with their families and the schools to ensure success.

4. Our Coaches continue to mentor and disciple each child in the program.

5. The result is motivated students of strong character with both their coaches and their families supporting them, leading to very low

failure rates and strong performance in school.

How does it work?

You can invest as a LEAD Partner by giving either monthly or annually. Each month, we’ll encourage you with a new story of one of the children in the program. You’ll learn a bit about them, their, background, and their progress. You’ll get to know and be able to pray for a different child each month. You’ll regularly see how your contribution and the contributions of others are making a transformative difference in the lives of many, many children.

How much should I give?

You may give any amount. No amount is too small! Here are some general guidelines that you might consider:

· $60 a month provides an education for a primary school (K-8) student.

· $90 a month provides an education for a high school student.

· $200 a month provides an education for a university student.

We just launched our new site within the past two weeks, and we’re excited! We believe it explains our mission, strategies, programs, and opportunities in a clear and cohesive fashion. I hope you’ll take some time to look through it and learn anew what we’re about. You’ll be excited and encouraged about the opportunities God has given us to renew hope and transform lives by building leaders using sports ministry!

Blessings,
