May 2021 - Imagine Waking Up Every Day Hungry . . .

Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, my brothers, you did it to me.’”  Matthew 25:37-40

Imagine waking up every day hungry . . .

Most of the time your parents have no food for you. In the morning, you can think of little else. You don’t want to have to go sit in school. You need to find something to eat. You skip school two or three times a week and spend much of the day foraging around trash piles in the slums—or trying to steal from food vendors—and many nights you go to bed hungry.

This is what life is like for tens of thousands of children in Nairobi, Kenya’s expansive slums. And Sports Outreach is doing what we can to help!

Our leaders and coaches in Nairobi have a very well thought out feeding strategy. In both the Mukuru and Kibera slums we provide two meals a day to kids at our ministry locations. We also serve 11 different nursery and primary schools to provide a morning meal to the students in the school.

It is substantial work! We provide over 90,000 meals a month to approximately 3,000 children. For most of them the food we give them is their main source of nutrition.

These meals:

Help them focus better in school.

  • Help them to be much healthier than they would otherwise be.

  • Provide a starting point for us to get to know children and youth, inviting them to sports and discipleship activities, and sharing the Gospel with them.

Will you help us?

Our goal is to raise $33,000 for these feeding programs for the next 12 months. School starts back for most kids in Nairobi this month after a year of confusion and lockdowns. We want to hit the ground running with our feeding! It’s a key strategic moment for us to help, and we don’t want to miss it.

  • $25 a month will feed 20 children one meal a day, five days a week.

  • $250 will provide almost 7,000 meals.

  • $1,500 will provide healthy food for one of the 11 schools we serve for an entire year!

This may sound too good to be true, but as someone who has been to Kenya and participated in these feeding programs, I can assure you that our team is effective, efficient and uniquely positioned to improve the chances of success in life for thousands of children by serving them simple, nutritious meals.

Please consider either a monthly commitment to sustain this work, or a one-time gift. And if you have any questions about our work in the slums of Nairobi, please get in touch with me at bmoomaw@sportsoutreach.net.

Yours in Christ,

Ben, for the entire Sports Outreach Team
