Lawrence - Difficult Disabilities, but He has a Chance

Short term Mission trips with SOI... They can be heartbreaking, yet life changing! One of our Board members, Dan, recalls a trip to Uganda in 2016... "My family and I met Lawrence in Lagutu (near Gulu) in November 2016. He had undiagnosed physical and mental challenges and having recently outgrown the preschool was sent back to the village to be cared for by his sick grandmother. The scene was heartbreakingly desperate. Clothed only in a dirty t-shirt, and with a seemingly absent expression, Lawrence shuffled along with only half his body responding to his commands and was placed in his grandmother's lap. There she told us that his mother had abandoned him at three months and some sickness had come upon him. She spoke so quietly and with such despair. She had experienced so much loss and violence from civil wars and conflicts and here in her own twilight was caring for one of the last of her family. Through Sports Outreach’s education initiative, Lawrence was given a scholarship to attend special schools, first in Kampala and now, in Gulu. He is flourishing!”
