David Kayomu: Education Leads Him from Grief to Gulu

My name is David Kayomu and I am 22 years old. I lost my mother when I was eight. After that, I lived with my father and was very much interested in soccer. Also, during that time. I got a chance to take part in the Sports Outreach Ministry program which has supported my education from that time until now.

It was very hard going through life without a mother; it took all my effort, but I managed to finish my primary exams so I could take advantage of the huge opportunity given to me through the SOM program. My father used to encourage me not to give up and I did not want to let him down either.

I went to secondary school with the help of SOM, and all was well at that time. I joined the chess club and started practicing chess. Things went smoothly, but then I lost my dad, and this really broke me up, because now I was helpless with both parents gone. It wasn’t easy for me to focus like before, and it was bad timing because I was about to sit for my Uganda Certificate of Education final exams (after secondary school).

Although it was a time of sorrows, people in America used to encourage me and told me to chase my dreams. I performed well on my exams and got accepted to medical school at Kampala institute of Science and Technology where I gained a certificate from the Medical Laboratory School.

Coach Robert, Robert Katende encouraged me to look for places where I could use my degree and earlier this year I got to interview to join the Sports Outreach medical clinic at the Good News Community Center in Gulu. I pray and hope that I will pass my interview to join the medical team there.

David has since learned that he passed his interview and will be working in Gulu. He would never have made it that far without your faithful prayers and generous support. It is so encouraging to learn the stories of these students whom God is building into leaders for the next generation.  Thank you so much!
