Prossy's Story - Education Changes Lives
Every child we help with education through our LEAD program has a unique story. Each is compelling in its own way, but I think you’ll find Prossy’s story particularly so. It highlights the fact that we do not just provide children an education for education’s sake. We help with this resource in the context of the significant long-term relationships we develop with children and their families. It makes the education far more effective and transformative in the life of the child.
In late 2018, Prossy was a student in sixth grade in a village near Gulu in Northern Uganda. She was raped and impregnated by a neighbor. It was a crisis situation. By the grace of God, the SOM Uganda staff became aware of her plight. She was able to join the Christine’s House of Anointing program. Over the course of nine months, she was counseled, trained, and prepared to give birth. Praise God, she came to know Christ as her savior during this time! In August of 2019, her baby was born.
Prossy and her daughter returned to her home. Thankfully, her family received and supported her. She had learned some basic farming techniques while at Christine’s house, so she was able to pitch right in with her family growing food. A Sports Outreach donor who had met her on a mission trip had graciously committed to support her to go to vocational school, and about the time she was making plans to do so, Covid hit. During the lock down period, she and her family decided that it would be better for her to continue her formal education. With SOM Uganda’s help, she made plans to return to school. The resource that the donor provided made it possible for her to attend a nearby boarding school. Her mother is caring for her daughter while she is in school. Prossy is so excited now to be back in school (in sixth grade again) and continuing to learn and grow. Her life has been renewed and she has hope for the future.
Thank you so much for your support in educating children like Prossy! By the way, our goal for education funding this year is $75,000. If you are not a monthly LEAD donor, would you consider becoming one?
